The ability to read a bar code symbol from any an-
gle as long as the bar code passes across the
scanner window.
Opacity
The property of a material that minimizes the show-
through of printing from the back side or the next
sheet.
Overhead
The number of characters in a symbol required for
start, stop and checking.
Over-laminate
A coating or material adhered to the scanning sur-
face of a bar code symbol.
Parity
A system for encoding characters as “odd” or
“even” for self checking of barcodes.
Peak
The graphical pattern on a scan reflectance profile
which looks like an upside down “U” or “V.” Within
a profile a peak represents a space. One or more
peaks could also be found within an element repre-
senting a reflectance change within an element.
Plaque
A template used as a reflectance calibration stand-
ard (RCS). The known reflectance values are
posted on the back of the plaque.
